Race Goals

I'm not really sure what to expect at tomorrow's 1/2 marathon. I don't race that often so it's hard to know what to aim for. In college, and even more so in high school (where we raced about 3 times a week!) it was must easier to know, race by race, what you felt you could do. With that many races, you were pretty in tune to your fitness level.

Having said that, I still think I need a goal for tomorrow. And I need something a little bit more specific than "run smart" or "run strong". I suppose to PR is a reasonable goal. I set my current PR (1:27:05) at a 1/2 marathon I ran in March in preparation for the Cleveland Marathon. My training has been relatively similar to my buildup for Cleveland so I don't see why I shouldn't be able to run at least close to 1:27. Of course now that I type that and read it I fear I'm going to run 1:35 and feel like junk. (I've always been a little shy about telling other people my goals - does that signify a lack of confidence?)

Regardless, I do want to run as even tomorrow as I can. I believe there is a big downhill at the start of the race so I won't worry about the first mile, but after that I'm just going to try to start running 6:35-6:40 per mile and see how long I can stick with it. Should be interesting!

As for today, O and I ran 30 minutes this morning and also did 6x20 second striders. I felt pretty decent. It seems like it's cooled off a good deal so hopefully tomorrow morning will be more of the same.

Good luck!!! I used to be shy about admitting my goals, until I started my blog. Now I won't shut up about them. It sounds like you're definitely in shape to scare your PR. Run how you feel, have fun, and you'll do great!
