Stanford's 4x1,500 relay team of Amanda Trotter, Lauren Centrowitz, Katy Trotter, and Arianna Lambie just set a new American record of 17:18.63 to win at the Penn Relays. Katy Trotter handed off to Lambie with a several second lead, and Villanova's Marina Muncan, who outkicked Lambie to help Villanova win yesterday's distance medley relay, was unable to run Lambie down this time.
Muncan cut into Lambie's lead on the first two laps of her 1,500 meter leg, but began to fade on her third lap. With one lap to go, Lambie and Stanford seemed to have the victory locked up, and then it was just a race against the clock. Lambie's 4:15 split (unofficial) brought Stanford home in a new American Record of 17:18.63, breaking the previous record (17:22.72 by Wisconsin's Maureen Hartzheim, Pam Hinton, Mary Hartzheim, and Suzy Favor in 1990) by more than four seconds.
Stanford's mark was just .53 seconds shy of the collegiate record, which was set by a Villanova team made up of Nnenna Lynch, Sonia O'Sullivan, Cheri Goddard, and Kathy Franey in 1990. That mark was not an American Record, because Sonia O'Sullivan was an Irish citizen.
Lauren Centrowitz became the second member of her family to hold an American record. Her father, Matt Centrowitz, set an American 5,000 meter record of 13:12.91 in 1982.
(Update: It's been pointed out to us that Katy and Amanda Trotter each became the second member of their family to hold an American record, as well. Interestingly, the record that Stanford broke also included a pair of sisters, Mary and Maureen Hartzheim. In doing research for this, we were very sad to learn that Mary passed away in December, 2005.)
