After winning the 3,200 at last weekend's California state meet, Mission College Prep freshman Jordan Hasay dropped down to the mile at this weekend's Golden West Invitational in Folsom, California and took on some of her state's best. Recent California transplant Nicole Blood was the race's early leader, but Hasay took over midway and prevented the pace from lagging. Alex Kosinski, a junior at Oak Ridge High School and the runner up in the state meet 1,600, stuck right with Hasay, while Blood struggled to maintain contact. Heading around the final turn, Kosinski challenged Hasay, but Hasay held her off up the homestretch and won the race in a nation-leading 4:42.21. Hasay's time places her second on the all-time freshman list, just behind Mary Decker's 4:42.0. Kosinski's 4:42.93 was a personal best, and Nicole Blood rounded out the top three (4:46.77).
Though Hasay is only a freshman, she is well known nationally, having won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships last fall. In the girls' 3,200, the last event of the evening, another freshman, who wasn't well known outside of her home state of Colorado, served notice that she'd be one to watch in the future. Kaitie Vanatta, who has only been running competitively for one year, pulled away from the 3,200 field at the halfway point and went on to smash her personal best by more than 14 seconds with a 10:16.18. Three-time Foot Locker Cross Country runner up Marie Lawrence of Reno, Nevada finished second in 10:20.95.
The evening's other champions included Colorado's Sarah Cocco (800, 2:08.45), Washington's Isak Bergman (800, 1:50.68), California's Chad Hall (mile, 4:11.67), and Ben Sitler (3,200, 9:07.44), also of California.
We'll be posting photos of the middle-distance and distance action soon.
