Norwich Union London Grand Prix being webcast live on WCSN.com Friday afternoon

The Norwich Union London Grand Prix is being webcast live on WCSN.com (for a fee) from 1:00-4:00 ET today.

Tirunesh Dibaba just won the 3,000 (8:29.55) and Carrie Tollefson led the U.S. runners with an 8:44.63. The men's 5,000 features a field that should be of interest to U.S. track fans, with seven Americans in the star-studded field.

Start lists/Results

Update: Behind Carrie Tollefson's 3,000m PR, Amy Rudolph finished 11th in 9:00.35 and Sara Hall finished 16th in 9:34.90. Lauren Fleshman was listed as a DNF and Lindsey Gallo, who served as the rabbit, had a planned DNF.

Hazel Clark was the lone U.S. representative in the 800; she finished fourth in 1:59.48.

The highly-anticipated men's 5,000 was a tactical race won by Bernard Lagat (12:59.22), who outkicked Kenenisa Bekele on the last lap. Lagat's time was only 1.01 seconds slower than Bob Kennedy's American record. Lagat remains the #2 U.S. performer of all time and his performance is the third fastest, behind Bob Kennedy's 12:58.21 (Zurich, August 14, 1996) and 12:58.75 (Stockholm, July 8, 1996).

Behind Lagat, it was a mixed bag for the other U.S. runners in the field. Adam Goucher finished ninth in 13:15.94, Abdi Abdirahman was 10th in 13:18.89, Rod Koborsi was 11th in 13:33.82, and Ryan Hall finished 13th in 13:58.69. Daniel Lincoln and Jorge Torres did not finish the race.

Kara Goucher becomes U.S.'s second-fastest woman at 10,000m; Alice Schmidt finishes second in 800m

On Wednesday, July 26th, in Helsinki, Finland, Kara Goucher finished third in the 10,000m at the GE Money Grand Prix with a 31:17.12. Her performance vaulted her to #3 on the U.S. all-time performance list, and made her the U.S.'s second-fastest 10,000m runner of all time (the top two times have both been run by Deena Kastor). Jen Rhines finished fourth in the race in 31:24.16, breaking her previous personal best of 31:26.66, which she ran at the 2005 World Championships. Despite the PR, Goucher's performance actually pushed Rhines back one spot on the all-time performers list, to seventh. Katie McGregor, who is now #5 on the all-time U.S. performers list with her 31:21.20 from the 2005 World Championships, also had a strong run in finishing fifth (31:32.17). Other U.S. finishers included Sara Slattery (eighth in a PR 31:57.94), Victoria Jackson (ninth, 32:59.32), and Samia Akbar (10th, 33:30.84). Missy Buttry and Renee Metivier were listed as DNFs and Blake Russell was listed as a DNS.

Not to be outdone, Alice Schmidt finished second in the 800m, behind Mozambique's Maria Mutola, in  1:59.47. Mutola, who has run 1:56.77 this season, won the race in 1:58.72. Nikeya Green of the U.S. finished ninth in the same race in 2:02.36.

On the men's side, the U.S.'s Tom Brooks finished 10th in the steeplechase in 8:40.87. The race was won by Poland's Radoslaw Poplawski in 8:19.25. Steve Slattery of the U.S. was listed as a DNF.

Matt Tegenkamp talks about his 13:04.90 5,000m

You may have noticed that our coverage has been lacking in the past week. This is a case of work on which I will be graded taking precedence over work on which I will not be graded (this web site). The course ends today, so we expect to resume normal coverage (and even add some photos and interviews) in the upcoming weeks.

In the meantime, you can read more about Matt Tegenkamp's 13:04.90 5,000, which puts him #4 on the U.S. all-time list, on the KIMbia web site.
