A sizeable U.S. contingent competed in the Kortrijkse Guldensporenmeeting (round five of the Flanders Cup) July 14, 2006 in Kortrijk, Belgium. Jonathan Johnson won the 800m in 1:47.79. The other U.S. competitors in that event were Kevin Elliott (fourth in "A" heat, 1:48.45), Bryan Berryhill (first in "B" heat, 1:48.91), Rob Myers (fifth in "A" heat, 1:49.64), John Jefferson (eighth in "B" heat, 1:55.32), and his twin brother Sean Jefferson (seventh in "C" heat, 1:57.18).
On the women's side, Nikeya Green finished second in the only heat of the 800m in 2:04.29. The race was won by former LSU star Neisha Bernard-Thomas, who competes for Grenada. Green was the only female U.S. middle-distance runner who competed in the meet.
ZAP Fitness' Thomas Morgan came up just short of victory in the rarely-run 2,000m race. He finished second to Kenya's Boaz Cheboiywo (a former NCAA champion for Eastern Michigan), 5:05.45 to 5:05.64. Max King finished eighth (5:12.82), Kyle King, no relation, finished 11th (5:15.60), and Kevin Clary finished 16th (5:32.75).
