Kara Goucher becomes U.S.'s second-fastest woman at 10,000m; Alice Schmidt finishes second in 800m

On Wednesday, July 26th, in Helsinki, Finland, Kara Goucher finished third in the 10,000m at the GE Money Grand Prix with a 31:17.12. Her performance vaulted her to #3 on the U.S. all-time performance list, and made her the U.S.'s second-fastest 10,000m runner of all time (the top two times have both been run by Deena Kastor). Jen Rhines finished fourth in the race in 31:24.16, breaking her previous personal best of 31:26.66, which she ran at the 2005 World Championships. Despite the PR, Goucher's performance actually pushed Rhines back one spot on the all-time performers list, to seventh. Katie McGregor, who is now #5 on the all-time U.S. performers list with her 31:21.20 from the 2005 World Championships, also had a strong run in finishing fifth (31:32.17). Other U.S. finishers included Sara Slattery (eighth in a PR 31:57.94), Victoria Jackson (ninth, 32:59.32), and Samia Akbar (10th, 33:30.84). Missy Buttry and Renee Metivier were listed as DNFs and Blake Russell was listed as a DNS.

Not to be outdone, Alice Schmidt finished second in the 800m, behind Mozambique's Maria Mutola, in  1:59.47. Mutola, who has run 1:56.77 this season, won the race in 1:58.72. Nikeya Green of the U.S. finished ninth in the same race in 2:02.36.

On the men's side, the U.S.'s Tom Brooks finished 10th in the steeplechase in 8:40.87. The race was won by Poland's Radoslaw Poplawski in 8:19.25. Steve Slattery of the U.S. was listed as a DNF.
