The U.S. women's team took home the gold at today's World Mountain Running Trophy in Bursa, Turkey. Nicole Hunt (ninth, 50:13), Rachael Dobbs (10th, 50:24), Chris Lundy (16th, 51:21), and Lisa Goldsmith (30th, 53:52) comprised the U.S. team which defeated the Czech Republic by two points, 35-37, with the top three runners scoring for each country.
The U.S. men, led by Simon Gutierrez (10th, 59:21) and Eric Blake (11th, 59:28) finished fifth as a team. Ricky Gates (25th, 1:01:08) and Paul Low (67th, 1:05:17) also contributed to the scoring, and Shiloh Mielke (77th, 1:06:46) and Kevin Tilton (87th, 1:08:08) rounded out the U.S. team. University of Richmond freshman Andrew Benford (12th, 46:36) led the U.S. junior boys to an eighth place team finish.
Meanwhile, the IAAF World Athletics Final took place September 9-10 in Stuttgart, Germany. Four U.S. middle and long distance runners took part, with mixed results. Bernard Lagat finished a close second in the 1,500 meters to Kenya's Alex Kipchirchir. Lagat crossed the finish line in 3:32.93, just .17 of a second behind Kipchirchir's championship record.
Khadevis Robinson finished fifth in the men's 800 meters (1:47.37), a race that was won by South Africa's Mulaudzi Mbulaeni in 1:46.99. In the women's 800 meters, Hazel Clark finished seventh in 2:00.88 behind winner Zulia Calatayud of Cuba (1:59.02), who set a championship record.
Carrie Messner finished 10th in the steeplechase in 10:04.72. Alesia Turava of Belarus won the race in 9:27.08.
