Manchester Central's Alex Hall to receive the Jack & June Mortimer Memorial Scholarship

The co-founders of the Millennium Mile are proud to announce the recipient of the 2006 Jack and June Mortimer Memorial Scholarship as Alexander Hall. Hall was a 2006 graduate of Manchester Central High School in Manchester, New Hampshire. As a member of the Little Green track and cross country teams, Hall won the 800 meter run at the 2006 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He was the runner-up at the 2005 New Hampshire State Cross Country Championships and received "All-Northeast" honors at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional. Hall was a five-time Manchester City Cross Country Champion and the Manchester City Mile Champion while attending Manchester Central High School. He etched his name into the New Hampshire state record books as a member of the record-setting 4x800m relay team in 2006. Hall is currently attending Dartmouth College and is a member of the Big Green men's cross country and track & field teams.

Hall will be receiving the Jack & June Mortimer Memorial Scholarship at the Millennium Mile post-race award ceremony following the running of the 8th Annual Millennium Mile on December 31, 2006. For more information about the race, please visit www.millenniummile.com.

Millennium Mile scholarship to be re-named for the second time in three years
After the inaugural Millennium Mile was run on December 31, 1999, the co-founders of the race—Andy Downin, Matt Downin and John Mortimer—established the Millennium College Scholarship in 2002. In April of 2004, John Mortimer’s mother, June, lost her two-year battle with cancer. In her honor, the Millennium Mile Scholarship was re-named as the June E. Mortimer Memorial Scholarship. After the most recently passing of John's father, Jack, on December 12, 2006, the scholarship has been once again renamed as the The Jack and June Mortimer Memorial Scholarship. Jack and June were both huge supporters of the Millennium Mile and their son's running career. They would love to see as many young student-athletes as possible benefit from the enriching experience of a higher education and collegiate athletics.

The mission of the fund is to help defray the tuition costs of a graduating high school senior who is planning on becoming a collegiate student-athlete. Each year, proceeds from the Millennium Mile Road Race go to help build the scholarship fund. The scholarship recipients are selected by the Board of Directors and at the following year’s race.
