We reported earlier today that the Once A Runner movie is scheduled to come out this summer. However, according to a sometimes-reliable source, the movie web site is just a well done hoax. OAR groupies and running fans will have to continue waiting for a much-anticipated movie version of the cult running novel.

This book should never become a movie. It would be an unbearable death of rare beauty.

amby,
I am the person behind the Once A Runner movie site. I did it as part of a graphic design student project. It was never really intended to make it into the "public arena", but it's been fun watching the results now that it has. I tried to be as faithful to the original material as I possibly could, so I'd be curious to know what John Parker thought of it. If you happen to revisit this post and read this, it would be really cool if you could either put me in contact with him, or relay some of his comments. My email is mousejp@auburn.edu

Right, it should not become a movie, but a miniseries instead.

Man, I got really excited when I saw the movie site. I really want one of those posters!

Now I know why I can't find the movie anywhere.
Great job Patrick! maybe you could bring this to Hollywood and get a movie deal.

Hard to articulate the mixture of emotions felt for the few moments I thought the movie might be an actuality...Joy at thinking a story as poignant as this would see a larger audience...Chagrin, knowing no one could do justice to my mind’s eye...Terror at the thought of the one true Quenton Cassidy being trotted out as a tear jerker...
all the best to JP in his recovery...
Again to Carthage is fantastic.

Just finished Carthage(loved it) and was sniffing around for a copy of OAR...gotta find some cash and get one. Anyway, I came across the movie site and references to it. My HR started to go nuts...now I'm bummed! Will remain optomistic to see more in the future about a movie.

This movie is even on Fandango. I was kinda heartbroken when I found out it's a fake. I am a college runner, and I really want to read the book. $7 for a movie ticket versus $150 on Amazon.com on a college budget... I think you get the idea.

OAR is coming back out in print. Amazon is already taking pre-orders. It is due in April 2009. I think the buzz created by the fake movie is bringing it back into print.

I'm so excited that the book is being re-printed... but really... I have to wait until April?! And I wanted to cry when I found out the movie trailer was a hoax. My inner runner was very sad. It took weeks of long runs to work through the pain... Ok, that's excessive. But I'd like to see this made into a movie. If anyone hears anything about it and wants to be nice and share, e-mail me at mjj0008@unt.edu.

I talked to John Parker, author of Once A Runner, about this. He hadn't previously seen this site, but thought it cleverly done when he took a look at it. He has sold about 100,000 copies of OAR, and also sold movie rights twice, but with nothing coming to fruition. He says he has finished the long-awaited Again To Carthage (did I get that title right?), and that it will be available this fall.
