University of Oregon first-year Kenny Klotz took over the junior men's 10,000m final at the 2007 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday evening in Indianapolis with about 10 laps remaining, and though his lead never appeared uncloseable, it held to the finish. Klotz won in 30:51.75, with Kevin Schwab in 30:56.75 behind him. Schwab had closed Klotz's gap to as little as three seconds but couldn't get closer.
"I heard he was getting close, but I couldn't tell how close he got," said Klotz after the race. After yesterday's 5,000m, my legs were a little tired, but it's nice to get the win." Klotz was caught at the finish line in the 5,000m on Thursday.
With Oregon's men's cross country team expected to contend for the NCAA title this fall, Klotz may opt not to extend his season another two weeks by running the Pan Am Juniors.
