At today's DN Galan in Stockholm, Sweden, Deena Kastor took a solid crack at Shalane Flanagan's American 5,000 meter record of 14:44.80 set in April at the Mt. SAC Relays. Kastor split 2:54, 5:50 for 1k and 2k respectively, but was unable to maintain the fast pace after the pacesetter dropped out. Kastor went through 3k in 8:50 and 4k in 11:51 before winning the race in a near-PR of 14:52.21. Kastor, who led for much of the race, ran away from 17-year-old Kenyan Linet Masai over the final couple of laps, with Masai finishing second in 14:55.50.
Behind Kastor, Lauren Fleshman set a new PR of 15:02.28 in finishing third. Americans Jen Rhines (15:12.64) and Sara Slattery (15:18.18) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Kastor, who is best known for her accomplishments in the marathon, defeated another great marathoner in Stockholm as Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia finished seventh in 15:33.93. Kastor is gearing up to run the 10,000 at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan later this month.
Later in the meet, Matt Tegenkamp turned in another solid performance, finishing fourth in the 3,000 meters in a near-PR of 7:35.68. Tegenkamp's training partner, Chris Solinsky, fell and did not finish the race. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Steve Slattery (eighth, 8:18:07) also came close to running a personal best.
In the 1,000 meters, Bernard Lagat set a personal best of 2:16.25 and finished third over the rarely run distance.

I am shaking my head in agreement with Albert as I read his comments about the same Deena (Drossin) Kastor .... My daughter was a teammate with Deena on their youth soccer teams in Agoura - Westlake Village, CA and Deena was a standout in that sport, also.
I also saw her in the State Meets @ Cerritos College (3rd in '89 as a soph and winning '90 & '91 in the 3200).
I've seen some great track thrills (Shorter in Munich, Billy Mills in Tokyo, but Deena taking a medal @ Athens was really terrific!). She is an inspiration to her contemporaries.

It's hard to believe that the same Deena Drossin that I watched run here in CA, during her high school career, is now one of the best runners in the world. I am not surprised anymore by what she accomplishes after her run in Athens. Best of luck to her in Osaka.
