I think its a big loss and shock to the running community.

Not trying to come off as a stinge or that I don't feel saddened by this loss, because I am sincerely saddened, but is there any intention for the fund at this point? Is it going to funeral costs, or is it a charity fund of some sort? Without a designation, it just seems like a very vague cause to be giving money to, especially in light of the current disasters in Mexico with the flooding, San Diego with the fires, and still New Orleans and Katrina. I'm all for memorials, vigils, commemorative ribbons and runs, but a fund at this point seems premature (unless, of course, it is to cover funeral costs; clearly the family does not need a bigger burden at this point). Again, I'm not trying to be insensitive, and realize that one donation doesn't necessarily exclude another. I'm just curious.

Joe Shay stated that the fund will go to specific plans that Ryan had to help the distance running community. Those included funding for distance programs at schools with little funding, a medical coverage program for athletes without access to health care, to name a few.

thanks for the heads up, alison. we're organizing an individual memorial run over at crn (completerunning.com) and wanted to give people an opportunity to donate as well.
