chasingKIMBIA is excited to announce the Auction for Education and to formally introduce The KIMbia Foundation. The hope is to raise awareness about the current state of education in Kenya and to offer people an opportunity to support education-related projects there.

The Auction for Education
Up for bid is a custom pair of KIMbia racing flats signed by Ben Maiyo and Stephen "Baba" Kiogora. This New Balance RC205 racing flat has been customized specifically for the KIMbia athletes. On the front is the KIMbia Athletics logo and on the back is the Kenyan shield. This is the same shoe that Ben and Baba will wear during the 2007 Boston Marathon. The auction has officially opened with a starting bid of $100. It will close at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on April 7th. The winning bid will go to support one of three education-related projects in Kenya (the winner's choice). For more information, please visit:

The KIMbia Foundation
The sole purpose of the KIMbia Foundation is to use its position in the world of athletics to support education in Kenya. Due to the high cost of education—roughly US$500 per year in school fees and related costs—many children are unable to attend high school. The price tag is not discerning; it affects the brightest student, the poorest student, an athletic student, a female student, and an HIV/AIDS-orphaned student equally. The KIMbia Foundation provides hope and opportunity through education.
The most common way that the KIMbia Foundation supports education is by providing financial assistance to bright, motivated students who cannot otherwise afford to attend school. It also provides assistance to larger school-wide projects, such as helping Silgich Hill Academy expand to accommodate more students or to help repair the track at Singore Girls Secondary School.

What’s it really like in the training mecca of Iten, Kenya? What’s daily life like in a farming community overlooking the Rift Valley? How do some of the world’s best runners prepare for the Boston and London marathons? Now’s your chance to find out.
KIMbia Athletics will send one person to its training camp in Iten from mid January through the Kenyan National Cross Country Championships in early February. KIMbia will pay for your airfare, lodging, and meals. In exchange, you'll document your experience on their web site.
Why are they doing this? Why not? KIMbia isn't your ordinary athletics group. From raising money to pay school fees in Africa to providing the unique coverage on ChasingKimbia.com, they're interested in using the power of running to bridge cultural gaps and make a difference. KIMbia is looking for someone who can bring to life for others their daily experiences of and full immersion into the Kenyan running scene.
While this is a story about running, we are looking for someone who is also interested in addressing the problems of poverty, education, and disease in contemporary Kenyan society. These are issues that interest us and so too the successful candidate.
To be considered for this trip, please send a 300-word essay, “Why You Should Send Me to Kenya.” The essay can be in the format of your choice. KIMbia will choose a winner based on which essay makes the best case and clearly communicates the reason he/she should come to Kenya with KIMbia. The deadline for entries is November 5, 2006; KIMbia will pick the winner by mid November.
To enter, send your essay and a brief bio to info@kimbia.net.
