Claudia Camargo, 35, of Danbury, Connecticut had the best credentials on the women's side.

Hunter Spencer of the Indiana Invaders was the favorite on the men's side.

Clayton Conrad, 24, of North Yarmouth, Maine warms up. The weather was cool, but the road was mostly dry after the previous day's snow.

Amy Gosztyla, an assistant coach at Stony Brook University and an accomplished runner, was one of the top runners in the women's field.

Hunter Spencer, a native of East Granby, Connecticut, was an All-American runner for the University of Kentucky.

Two minutes before the scheduled start of the race, we were mistakenly informed that there would be no lead vehicle this year, so we ran down to the 3/4 mile mark (luckily the race started late) and photographed the race from there.

By the 3/4 mile marker, Hunter Spencer had established a commanding lead over the rest of the field. The leaders at the 1/4 mile ($50), 1/2 mile ($75), and 3/4 mile ($100) were given bonuses this year.

Others dashed out and grabbed the 1/4 and 1/2 mile bonuses, but Hunter Spencer took control of the race after that.

Hunter Spencer went on to win the race in 3:52, just one second off the course record which is co-held by Scott Anderson (1999) and Andy Downin (2001).

Hunter Spencer's 1,500m best on the track is 3:40.91, which gives you a sense of how much the downhill nature of this course aids the runners' times.

With 1/4 of a mile to go, Nate Jenkins had pulled away from the rest of the field slightly and was running in second place.

Nate Jenkins, who ran a 2:15 marathon in 2006, finished second here in 4:00.

Mark Miller leads the chase group. Miller, 26, of Keene, New Hampshire, finished fourth in 4:03.
